Initiatives

ULC is an organization grounded in immediate practical challenges that are tackled with targeted, value-conscious programs. Among these are initiatives designed to gather public library directors and elected officials around common  challenges.  Consider Partners for Success, a biennial conference that examines the emerging ways libraries contribute to the improvement of urban life. The conference is noted not only for its ability to convene a variety of urban activists, library directors, trustees, mayors and other city and county officials, but for the rich discussion and research it generates. The 2009 conference will be held in Nashville, and past host cities have included Boston, Chicago and Cleveland.

ULC also launched a comprehensive program to prepare libraries for the future: Foresight 2020. Foresight 2020 allows member libraries to build a sustainable competitive advantage—an ability to learn, innovate, and move faster. The Foresight 2020 online community, www.ulc2020.org, breaks down traditional hierarchy by engaging ULC members at all levels.
